Renoir was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of Impressionism. He was the father of the actor Pierre Renoir, the film maker Jean Renoir and the ceramic artist Claude Renoir. He was the grandfather of film maker Claude Renoir, the son of Pierre.

The paintings were never publicly exhibited during the artist's lifetime. In 1813 the Inquisition confiscated both as "obscene" and held them until 1836 when they were released to the Academy of Fine Arts, San Fernando.
