PAINTINGS BY RENOIR

Nude in the Sun  (1875)

No.1/134
Pierre Auguste Renoir 1841-1919. The artist's aim here was to study the effect of sunlight shining through the leaves of the trees on to flesh. The critic Albert Wolff was not impressed, saying "Try to explain to M. Renoir that a woman's torso is not a mass of decomposing flesh."

Another Renoir painting tomorrow
