RAPHAEL

The School of Athens

No.77

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, better known as Raphael (1483-1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, they form the trio of great masters of that period. Painted during 1509/10, the above, his most famous fresco, is in the Apostolic Palace, Vatican City. It has been suggested that nearly every Greek philosopher can be identified in the painting, but to do so would be very difficult.
